Drug Free Marshals Attack Drug Abuse
Bay Area Drug Free Marshals are calling for 500 new Marshals to join
the ranks of thousands of bay area children and adults who have taken the pledge to
live drug free lives. "Forty nine new Marshals have been sworn-in at ceremonies in
Happy Hollow Park, after school YMCA programs and churches in recent weeks in
San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties with another 62 new Marshals to
take the pledge this week," said program coordinator Maria Carmen Senn.
The "War on Drugs" has raged since the 60s, with total governmental costs
reported over $177 billion and no end to the spending in sight. The Drug Free
Marshals program cuts to the heart of the problem making anti-drug education fun.
The program specializes in creating fun contests and events in business and
organizations for children and receives no government aid. Children and their
families participates in events that show living drug free is fun.
"Drugs degrade the ability to study, comprehend and make sound
judgments" said Dr. Richard Gringeri of Santa Clara who has participated in the
program for 8 years. Dr. Gringeri has sworn in 100s of people, including over 200
at a local family reunion, feels the Drug Free Marshals program works as it gets
kids participating at an early age in creating a drug free future.
The Drug Free Marshals participate in local events and parades which keep
the children and their families involved in leading the way to a drug free
community. During 2005 the organization sponsored award winning floats in the
San Jose Holiday parade, Mexican Independence Day and Cinco de Mayo in San
Jose and marched in other San Jose, Palo Alto, Mountain View and San Francisco
parades.
Inspired by the words of American writer and philosopher L. Ron Hubbard, "Save
the child and you save the nation" the program began with swearing in of 200 Drug Free
Marshals in 1993 by the Drug Demand Reduction Office of the FBI in Los Angeles
and has spread internationally as a grass roots movement. The Drug Free Marshals
campaign sends the message to everyone to be drug free while giving children a major
role in shaping a drug free future.
